The PGR paid nine million pesos (about 686,000 dollars) to the family of Guillermo Vélez, who was arrested and tortured to death when he was accused of leading a gang of kidnappers.
The Attorney General 's Office (PGR) compensated the family of Guillermo Vélez Mendoza, who was arrested and tortured to death when he was accused of leading a gang of kidnappers.
After 12 years of Guillermo Velez's death, the PGR paid nine million pesos (about 686,000 dollars) to his family for moral damages caused by their loss.
Through a letter sent last Thursday to Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam, the family lawyer acknowledged the position adopted by the PGR, after the Third District Judge of Mexico City ordered the compensation in February.
"A compensation is demanded for moral damage suffered by the Vélez Mendoza family derived from your responsibility in the case of Guillermo Vélez Mendoza, who was tortured to death and publicly discredited during the administration of Attorney General Rafael Macedo de la Concha," explained the letter.
The letter also mentioned that Murillo Karam recognized the irregularities which ocurred during the arrest and murder of Guillermo Vélez, "we know that you have had the civil courage to publicly admit the excesses and errors that some PGR officials have incurred in previous administrations."
